WHAT TO DO?

In the last few years Kite surfing has been established on the peninsular and it is now rated as being among the best in the world.

The peninsula, surrounded on one side by the Indian Ocean and on the other by Puttalam’s lagoon, is the perfect place for kite surfing, with several spots for beginners as well as advanced riders.

For further information about lessons and locations go to http://www.srilankakiteschool.com/ a great place for learners and beginners alike which is only 25 minutes away

Closer to home there is a boat house on the beach by Bar Reef Rresort where you can embark to see the whales and dolphins in the season – the best time to leave is 6.30am.Dolphin watching was discovered at Kalpitya only a few years ago when it was established that the deep shelf leading into the Indian ocean created a perfect feeding ground. Another kilometre out it is also possible to spot sperm whales.

Dolphin watching can be extremely rewarding or rather frustrating. Sometimes there can be literally thousands; at others the wind might present a swell which would make it unsafe.

During the peak season it is highly likely you will successfully see a sight never to be forgotten. In the low season, the monsoon winds are likely to keep you kite surfing. What’s good for one is bad for the other!

From the boathouse you can also hire canoes, kayaks, or a small sailing dingy out for a jaunt.  The boat house crew can also arrange water-skiing and donut rides when the sea is calm.

Sri Lanka’s best preserved coral reef is an hour and a half by boat away where you can snorkle or arrange diving trips – the latter needs to be pre-booked.

Fees for all boathouse activities should be settled at the Bar Reef office. Rates are available in advance, just send us an email.

Four bicycles are also available to tour the local villages or simply to peddle over to one of the other resorts if you don’t feel like walking. Just ask the staff and they will provide them.

The local town is a short drive away.  In many ways its greatest delight is its regional simplicity, being a very ordinary large fishing village going about its everyday business.

WILPATTU AND THE CULTURAL TRIANGLE

A minibus can be rented for a tour of the cultural triangle and the  local game park.  While the distance is relatively small, like the whole of Sri Lanka, the roads aren’t great and you  should allow a day or two for this tour.   Once accomplished, the peace and quiet of Khomba House is a great place to return to.
